Born in Cape Flats, South Africa, and living in Hackney Wick, London, Esa Williams is a successful DJ, Worldwide FM radio host and producer of eclectic global electronic music. Most notably Williams is firing up the legacy of Ata Kak and collaborating with Auntie Flo. On top of that, Esa carved out a niche curating electronic music-focused educational programmes in Cuba, East Africa and South Africa. With his engagement he inspired a new generation of DJ’s and producers — which is why he is regarded as a creative polymath connecting the dots of electronic world music on many levels. In his STRRR episode, Esa Williams presents a selection of rare video footage ranging from a historical newsreel clip that shows the release of Nelson Mandela in 1990 to a stunning performance of the late great Hugh Masekala.
